This work is a rare example with a recorded date of production and is representative of Heian-period polychrome painting (the original is shown here).

Within it, the robe in the Nirvana scene features what is considered the oldest example of kirikane in Japanese Buddhist painting.

In my doctoral research, I undertook a study to recreate this kirikane technique.
